A wanted thug was shot dead, and a policeman injured, in a running gun-battle at the 249.2km East Coast Highway (LPT) near Jabor in Kuantan, Pahang early Saturday.
Earlier during the encounter, Chiang Hon Hing, 39, who was armed with a pistol, had fired in the direction of a police team which ordered him to surrender.
The police returned fire, hitting him in the abdomen in the incident about 1.10am.
Chiang, of Bandar Baru Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, who was linked to car-jackings and drug trafficking, was sent to the
Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.
Lance Corporal Mohd Jarizan Md Jid who was injured in the right hand during the gun-battle, is recuperating at the hospital.
Pahang police chief Datuk Sharifuddin Ab Ghani said, prior to the shootout, Chiang had abandoned a car before hijacking a Kuantan-bound LPT patrol car from two traffic personnel at the Lanchang toll plaza.
