More Malaysians are obese

Obesity in developing countries like Malaysia is still on the upward trend, said Datin Paduka Dr Santha Kumari, chairman of the Malaysian Diabetes Association's Selangor branch. Almost 1 in every 2 Malaysians are obese. She said the matter should be viewed seriously as it could lead to various complications, including type 2 diabetes cases. "Malaysia is leading in the prevalence of obesity among Southeast Asian countries. Almost one in two Malaysians are either overweight or obese, placing them at a high risk for diabetes," Dr Santha Kumari told a press conference in Klang Tuesday. She said a recent study showed that 22% of Malaysians above the age of 30 were diabetic patients. It is vital for diabetic patients to seek counselling on the disease in order to adopt a healthy lifestyle and prevent serious complications, she said. Meanwhile, the association will be hosting a charity dinner, featuring US evergreen group The Three Degrees at the Premiere Hotel in Klang on June 16. Source: Bernama
